The United States did not support a non-binding declaration at the United Nations General Assembly expressing concern for violations of “human rights and fundamental freedoms based on sexual orientation and gender identity." Why not? Because “the nature of our federal system prevents us from undertaking commitments and engagement where federal authorities don’t have full jurisdiction,” U.S. Deputy Ambassador Alejandro Wolff said.December 20, 2008
